Is now back at Margam, and is due to recieve a D exam very soon. It left Cardiff Tidal sometime around the 31st July, probably using the same road transport that brought 08782 in from Newport.

08752 is back at Tidal Sidings now. Not sure what has been replaced, probably 08782 although there were problems with 08466. _________________ Regards
This mainly concerns 08782, but with 752 being back and forth to Margam with various faults, would it be better / cheaper to reinstate one of the stored 08 / 09's at Margam. With 08782 on its last legs, couldn't the Margam staff canibalise it to get one of the others back to mainline standards. Granted, one of them has a dirty great hole ripped out of the bodywork, so that'll be a no no. But surely, amongst all the others, there's got to be at least one, worth working on.
It just seems a waste really, seeing them all lined up like that, when the active ones, seems some-what knackered.

With all due respect to my pet gronk, it really hasn't been too mechanically problematic in the past few years. Shifted carnks has happened to most of the remote controlled's, colliding with a wagon was unfortunate, having to send the loco to Margam for brake blocks will happen to all the south wales fleet and a D xam is inevitable with all loco's.
However, it does not have the power that it had before it went to Ferrybridge for a Super E xam.
08782 needs a lot of work doing on it and nothing that a D xam can't do. It hasn't been to Margam since over a year ago for repairs and Eastleigh did the shifted cranks on it.
However I need to find out why 854 has been brought out of the storage lines. Perphaps they'll do an auxillary generator change or just rob it to keep the others running. _________________ Regards
Do you know weather or not it is particularly difficult/expensive to fit a shunter with the remote control equipment?
Would it be possible for the R/C equipment to be removed from 854, if this shunter has been withdrawn, and put onto another loco or is the equipment quite complex to render it worth doing unless they have a serious shortage.
With Fowey now using one of the R/C fleet they could have shortages if there are multiple failures like last year.
I recall seeing 08921 at Crewe EMD with its R/C light clusters removed a couple of years ago.

Sorry, a trifle premature. 752 is still at Margam and is due to be swopped with 782 tonight. 951 seems to be the preferred loco at Tidal and derogatory words for 466. _________________ Regards

I think the problems experienced last year were a one off. EWS have reduced loadings to 9 MBA's at a time and the staff are more experineced now with the remote control equipment.
Tidal only needs two loco's, plus one spare and one under maintenance at Margam. 921 has non standard remote control, hence its use at Fowey. I'm not sure what is happening with 854 as it has been pulled from the storage sidings. _________________ Regards
Rhys,
.
Apart from the obvious external details, of lights fore, aft and amidships (together with the associated trunking) the only other visible R/C alterations can be found in the cab.
.
The system was fitted (IIRC) by / on behalf of, Hima Sella at Doncaster.
.
Personally I have no idea as to how the system is fitted and whether or not it could be swopped from one loco to another with ease - but, if it meant paying a contractor to do it, that may end the arguement.
.
By using 'non-R/C' locos off Tidal, I assume that EWS would start to lose money on its contract with Celsa, now having to pay two men (driver & shunter) instead of one.
.
The photos were apparently taken when the loco was undergoing attention and show the cab modifications of a Cl.08 fitted with the Hima Sella R/C system.
.
On the drivers desk, the only obvious change is the 'manual / remote' switch and its associated green light - seen on the estreme left of the desk.
.
Mounted on the rear wall of the cab is a large grey box - containing the 'gubbins' .
.
Photos of the light clusters can be found elsewhere, they are the same for all except 08921 which employs a different system - but which has worked Tidal / ASW in the past.
