Due to Network Rail not allowing EWS to use an 08 for the Hardendale - Harrison Siding trials, 09020 was removed from Trafford Park on the 25th April 2004, and was taken north to replace 08632 at the quarry, located just north of Shap summit. The next day, 09020 successfully completed four trials along the mainline, taking two rakes of empties to Harrison's, and returning with loaded wagons. On the 21st September though, the 09 was taken out of traffic, being stored WNTR. Four days later, road transport arrived to take the ailing shunter south to Yorkshire, to where it was deposited at Doncaster Carr later on in the day. Repairs completed, transferring to WSNE, it was reinstated on the 5th October.
