Whilst undergoing a D exam at Doncaster Carr, 09106 was put into the WNTR pool and storage on the 9th May 2004. With exam completed, it was released into traffic, working in the nearby Decoy yard. Although still stored, it continued to see active use. On the 21st September, it was finally officially reinstated to traffic, joining the WSEM pool. This move co-incided with its removal from Doncaster, where it was taken north by road to Goole, being deposited shortly after. Its stay was short lived though, as on the 2nd November, it suffered a generator failure. With this, it was placed in store the same day, moving to the WNTR pool. On the 5th November, it left the docks on a low loader, returning south back to South Yorkshire and Doncaster Carr.
On the 12th February 2009, 09106 left Doncaster and was taken by road to Didcot Milton Park, from where it was unloaded and then tripped the short distance to Didcot Yard. Due to a broken spring, 09106 was once again on the move, leaving Didcot by road on the 20th April, being deposited at Doncaster Carr later in the day. With repairs completed, the 09 was back on the move once more, being taken south by road to Wembley yard on the 26th April. This move was to cover / replace the defective 08897. Whilst piloting Wembley Yard, 09106 failed on the 16th June, suffering from a broken air pipe. The next day however, repairs were completed and it was back working the yard. Due to the arrival of 08904 at Wembley, the problematic 09 was tripped to Acton on the 20th August, before being loaded on to road transport. Leaving sometime in the morning, it headed north, en-route to South Yorkshire, to where it was unoaded at Doncaster Carr in the evening. With repairs obviously due, it'll most likely to be put in store after an assessment is completed. As expected, 09106 was put into store on the 30th August, moving from WSSN to the WNTS pool. Repairs completed, 09106 was reinstated back to traffic on the 6th November, moving back to its previous WSSN pool. Co-inciding with its acceptance back into traffic, the 09 was loaded and removed from Doncaster Carr, mid morning on the 10th November. Taking over the pilot duties for the departing 08737, the EWS liveried 09 was unloaded at the DBS container terminal at Trafford Park, early afternoon.
