The former Goole Docks shunter was transferred south to the East Midlands, sometime in February 2008. By early March, it recieved the EWS livery at Toton TMD. Sometime in early May though, it was back at Doncaster. On the 1st June, 08428 was put into store at Doncaster Carr. Officially, it was reinstated back to active use on the 19th June, where it was put to use in the nearby Belmont Yard. Due to 08428 recieving a E exam at Doncaster Carr, it was put into store on the 14th December, prior to it being released back into traffic after completion.

Although listed on TOPS as stored, 08428 was, around January 2009, working as the wood Yard pilot at Doncaster. On the 13th February, 08428 was reinstated to traffic and the WSSN pool at Doncaster. Its period in active use didn't last long, because on the 10th March, it was put back into store again. After repairs were completed, on the 18th March, it was released back into traffic, and subsequently reinstated to the WSSN pool. Latterly operating as the Decoy Yard pilot, 08428 was stored WNTR on the 24th July, whilst recieving an exam at Doncaster Carr. Repairs all completed, the subsequent reinstatement took place on the 13th August, with the 08 being reunited with its previous WSSN pool. Leaving Doncaster on the 11th November, 08428 headed north to Scotland, utilising the road transport that deposited 08993 at Carr TMD. Arriving at Mossend later in the day, the EWS liveried shunter, has taken over the pilot duties at the yard.

Update: Due to the arrival of 08888 at Mossend, 08428 was loaded and removed by road on the 20th December. Following an overnight stop-over en-route, it continued its journey south to Rugby, the next day. Being deposited at the Colas Yard because of such facilities being available, 08428 ran light engine to the DBS yard, thus becoming the first shunter at Rugby, for well over 3 years !
