Although it was officially stored at Ayr TMD on the 15th March 2004, it still continued to see use around the depot compex. The 2nd April though, it was stopped with unknown faults.
By the 1st July 2007, it was brought south from Ayr to Goodman's Yard. Nine days later, 08511 was deposited at Barry, where it underwent attention and an exam. Although it was very much active on the Vale of Glamorgan Railway, as of yet, it has not been officially classed as a preserved loco.
Due to failure of the north FLT pilot, Traditional Traction's 08511, left Barry early morning by road, being taken away out of South Wales on the 6th July 2009. Being deposited at Felixstowe much later on, it replaced the broken and out of use 08691.
