On the 30th August 1999, 08523 was placed into store and the WSXX pool at Bescot. Sometime towards the end of December, it left Bescot and the West Midlands by road, deposited at Crewe later the same day.
RT Rail owned 08523, was removed from Crewe DMD on the 4th March 2004, and tripped the short distance to the nearby LNWR for attention. While recieving repairs, it was due to be outshopped in GWR green, prior to being moved to the Gloucestershire / Warwickshire Railway.
By the 30th March 2007, it left RMS Locotec, Wakefield for South Wales. On the 7th April, it was deposited at Onllwyn Washery, where it currently resides, replacing Margam bound, 08770.
