Unveiled by Don Gates's widow at a private ceremony, 08664 was named  Don Gates 1952-2000  on the 20th April 2002, taking place at Eastleigh TMD. Mr Gates, who sadly died shortly after retiring, had previously worked for the railway since 1952.

After release from repairs at Toton, it was deposited at Eastleigh sometime around the 23rd January 2004.

08664 was transferred north from Eastleigh to Didcot on the 3rd October 2007 and consequently had its  'DON GATES 1952-2000'  nameplates removed.

Sometime in early May 2008, it left Didcot and was deposited at Doncaster, where it was believed to undergo repairs. On the 1st June however, it was officially put into store. But in just over 5 months, it was reinstated to traffic on the 11th November. It's reinstatement didn't last very long though, because on the 8th December, 08664 was returned to store, still at Doncaster.

Sometime around the 18th March 2009, 08664 entered the depot, from where it recieved an E exam. It also recieved new wheelsets. Moving from the WNTS storage pool at Doncaster Carr, 08664 was reinstated to traffic and transferred to WFMU on the 19th September. On the 1st October though, the 08 was moved back into storage and WNTR.
