Built in 1959 at Horwich Works, D3861 entered traffic in November 1959, arriving at Annesley shed, near Kirkby in Ashfield. In 1962, it was moved the short distance to Nottingham TMD, where it stayed until the depot closed in 1967. Moving to Crewe was next, spending twenty years there. August 1983, the shunter was taken to Swindon Works, where it recieved an overhaul, plus the fitting of dual brakes.
During a private ceremony at Old Oak Common, 08694 was named Pat Barr on the 2nd August 2000, the unvieling undertaken by Mrs Barr. Pat was an engineer at the depot, who sadly passed away in early 2000.
On the 27th February 2004 and at Old Oak Common, 08694 was put into store, spending the latter part of its time, dumped in the turntable area.
Sometime during December 2008, EWS made 08694 available for sale. Just after christmas, it was purchased by CF Booth's.
On the 8th Juanuary 2009, it was extracted from the Old Oak Common turntable, leaving West London by road, en-route to its new home in Rotherham, to where it was deposited later on. Whilst awaiting for the cutters torch at Booth's, sometime around the beginning of May, 08694 had a reprieve, as it was sold on to the Great Central Railway. On the 22nd May, it was moved from Rotherham to Loughborough, to where it was unloaded shortly after. This move also co-incides with it being now classed as a preserved loco. During its time at the GCR, it is due to undergo restoration and a full repaint.
