During a ceremony at the Tinsley TMD open day, 08879 was named Sheffield Childrens Hospital. The unveiling, taking place on the 27th April 1996, was performed by Richard Jeavans, who was a committee member of the hospital. This was the second of Tinsley's shunters to carry the name, 09008 being the original carrier.
Previously working at the cement works at Ketton, 08879 was taken away by road on the 4th April 2004, being deposited at Old Oak Common later in the day.
Latterly out of use at Old Oak Common, 08879 was loaded on to road transport on the 27th April 2009, heading out of West London, late evening. It was deposited at Eastleigh the following day. Whilst recieving an exam at Eastleigh, it was put into store on the 22nd May, transferring from WSSA to the WNTR pool. Sometime during the early part of July, 08879 was moved to the nearby yard, joining 08804 for pilot duties. Due to the completion of 08482's exam and a return to Eastleigh yard, 08879 was left surplus to requirements and was subsequently move back to the depot area. For repairs and a possible return to traffic, 08879 was tripped from Eastleigh depot to the nearby yard, sometime around the 19th / 20th September. From here, it was loaded onto road transport, leaving Hampshire early on the 21st, en-route for the East Midlands, to where it was deposited at Toton later in the day.
