As part of the twinning between RES and the Royal Mail, 08888 was named ' Postman's Pride ' at Newcastle Central station on the 24th April 1991. During the cermony, the nameplate was unveiled by John Eddleston, a Newcastle postman.
Whilst at Goole docks, 08888 was put into store on the 27th February 2004, although it still continued to see use in the yard. On the 8th May though, it was reinstated to the WSEM pool and traffic. With the 08 continuing to experience faults, on the 21st September, it was taken to Immingham by road and subsequently placed into WZTS and storage.
Despite been officially put into store at Doncaster Carr TMD in October 2006, 08888 left for Worksop on the 11th November, staying there for just over a month. By the 18th December, it was taken north to Thornaby by road, where it was dumped in the depot complex.
On the 10th February 2008 though, it was back at Doncaster Carr. The 1st June however, saw 08888 leave Yorkshire for Scotland and was deposited at Millerhill Yard, replacing 08798. On the 13th August, it was officially put into store, shortly after being placed on decision about its future. The 31st October saw 08888 leave Millerhill by road. Its destination being Doncaster Carr, from where it continued its stint in store.
On the 4th June 2009, 08888 was being prepared at Doncaster Carr, for removal by road to Ketton. With the departure of 08784 to Toton, 08888 arrived at Ketton on the 5th June, being deposited mid afternoon. As expected, the EWS liveried 08 was reinstated to traffic, transferring to the WSSK pool on the 16th June. Due to continuing problems with 08888, the shunter was removed from Ketton, utilising the transport which brought in the arriving 08703, its replacement from Doncaster Carr. The move taking place early afternoon on the 25th September, the defective shunter left en-route for the East Midlands, being deposited at Toton shortly after. On arrival, it was quickly put into store, transferring from the WSSK construction pool to WNTR.
Update: Due to 08428 being defective at Mossend, 08888 was despatched north from Toton by road, leaving the East Midlands for Scotland on the 19th December. With a more than probable overnight stop-over, the 08 will be most likely to be unloaded the following day. As expected, 08888 arrived at Mossend on the 20th.
