Latterly out of use with engine problems at Allerton TMD, 08897 was returned to traffic on the 27th January 2004. Tripped the short distance to Garston sometime during mid 2004, the 08 was used as the FLT pilot. Suffering faults though, it was taken out of traffic on the 5th October, being put into store and the WNTR pool. Shortly after, it was back at Allerton, where repairs took place. On completion, the EWS liveried shunter was removed by road, being deposited at Trafford Park FLT on the 11th November. Upon arrival, it was officially made available for use, being transferred to the WSWM pool.

Previously at Warrington Arpley, was taken away by road on the 13th May 2008 to Wigan Springs Branch TMD for a wheelset change. On the 29th October, and still at Springs Branch, 08897 was officially put into store. After repairs, it left Springs Branch by road on the 17th December, en-route to Acton, from where it was forwarded by rail to Wembley Yard. This was to cover for the stricken 08786, which suffered from a fire in its main generator. On arrival at Wembley ( 18th ), 08897 was reinstated to the WSSN pool and to active traffic.

After having a period out of use at Wembley, 09106 was sent down from Doncaster Carr on the 26th April 2009, to provide cover. On the 10th June, 08897 was tripped the short distance from Wembley to Acton, from where it was loaded onto road transport. Mid afternoon, it left North London, en-route to Doncaster Carr for possible repairs and storage. As expected and following inspection, it was stored WNTS on the 29th June, whilst awaiting engine repairs.
