Now confirmed and full details on Northern Rail Website....a chance to get a photo of some difficult to see 08's Very Happy  Very Happy

I'll be there, without a doubt. Got my trip all worked out aswell.

Starting off with Tinsley, Healey Mills, maybe Midland Rd. As i don't need many of the FHH 66's, it will depending on what's on TOPS. Then it'll be on to the open day, before heading off to Crossleys scrapyard in Skipton. The KWVR and Embsay will be the final two visits of the day.

Should be a good day. See you all there  Cool

Hi,
I also need two ; 525 and 950.Does anyone know whether the whole depot will open to the public, for viewing ?
Furthermore, with my tickets on order,it would be a pleasure to meet any members at Neville Hill,if possible. [Perhaps a pint afterwards?]

All the best ,Frank..

Not all the depot will be open Frank. Which bits which are not though, i don't know. Anything past the turntable, i would imagine. I'm taking a pair of bins, just in case units / coaches are too far away.

As for the pint, that would be nice, but i'll have to take a rain check on that one. I'll be in too much of a rush, as me & the old man will be dashing off, once finished. Got loads more places to visit after the open day.

Originally, i was going to park around by the depot, but i value my hub caps too much, so i'll be parking at Leeds station, grabbing a few units from the platform, then catching the bus in.

Do you know how much it will cost to park at Leeds Stn Question . Is it that much of a bad area,i've parked close to the playing field a few times and maybe i've just been lucky.

Been to NL many times and parked in vicinity without any problems-if concerned can park just off A64 in busy area traffic wise and its a 10/15 min walk to the Depot-Martin

£4 all day, saturday & sunday.

The Neville Hill area is rough, and to leave your car there for about 2-3 hours, could be dodgy. Granted, parking there for 30 mins will be fine, but the place will be heaving, and as the depot is in the middle of an housing estate, parking will be a problem.

If you are prepared to walk that little bit further, then parking on the nearby industrial estate ( Newmarket Lane ) should be alright. Not sure about clamping around here though. If using this option, i would check for signs etc.
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&a...1887&t=h&z=16&iwloc=A

Saying all that, the main reason i'm catching the bus, is to try and grab a few units before hand. Our original plan was to use the ind estate, but as the car park is cheap, we decided to use that option instead.

Will the number of visitors be limited? I'm sure parking will be a major nightmare given the surroundings and i'm sure NL will come up with alternative parking areas other than around the depot vacinity!

I'll probably give this a miss due to me photting most of the shunters there over the last few months and also not giving a stuff about coaches and DMU's!

I wouldn't have thought so Phil. I'm pretty sure that Northern's Newton Heath open day wasn't restricted to x amount of vistors, and because all of the funds are going to charity, i would think that'll be more the better.

As for parking being so poor around the area, i'm presuming that's why they have the bus shuttle. A temporary platform in the depot would've been better, but as with most open days, the H&S bods put a stop to that.
concrete bob

Tickets have already been despatched guys, as i had mine on thursday ( 20th ).

It does state about the parking though, especially on Osmondthorpe Lane, which runs past the depot entrance. The police will be placing extensive parking restrictions here, but i would imagine that the industrial estate should be ok.

What's changed in the recent years? I believe Newton Heath had a shuttle working into it last Open Day and in 1998 Toton depot had a temp platform with shuttles running to Derby. 2 years ago a temp paltform for the DRS Open Day at Kingmoor was requested, but that too was ruled out on H&S grounds.

As for that Toton shuttle, found out afterwards tickets were being checked only at Derby as people queued to board. Someone who like me had caught a bus from Nottingham station, got on the shuttle at Toton, went to Derby then stayed on and waited for the return working.

Yes thanks Dave it was 08397 from AN and beside it was the grey one from AN but couldn't see the nos at all so cant really count it and could only see 0839 fron the ews one,as they were both hidden behind the fuel tanks annoying.

As stated,397 and 954 positioned in the fueller area, with 389 and 405-the no on 954 was definately visible if you walked far enough down the bank-both numbers visible from A52 using our telescope-Martin

Sounds like your source is as good as mine  Rolling Eyes
Livery is still the same as it was when back at Derby.

Apparently was going to be done but ran out of paint doing all those HST power cars ready for the Open Day Confused

Still first Open Day I've been to in 40 yrs where you could only walk around in a clock-wise direction Exclamation

Bit disappointed with the actual open day, but i didn't really expect many visiting locos to attend, and i copped a few shunters, so it wasn't all bad.

Tinsley

Setting off nice and early from the Midlands, we seen 08691 still sitting on its low loader at the LH Group.

Arriving at Tinsley just before 08.30, i'd previously looked on Google Maps for anymore vantage points. If going during the week, you may be succesful in viewing the shunter, but as i didn't, i wasn't  Rolling Eyes
That'll be added to the directions sections very shortly, by the way.

Anyway, looking from the road bridge by where the depot used to be, nothing was seen from here either. One last vantage point to try, so we drove in a big circle, just to get on the other side of the bridge. For those who have been there recently, some fool thought it would be a good idea to make the bridge a bus only route, with the exit blocked off by a metal ramp in the ground !

Heading towards the steel works, we pulled up at an island, where the VOW office block stands. Looking over to towards the works, 08623 stood in a half decent position. First cop of the day  Razz

Healey Mills

Only needing a few of the 56's from here, we arrived about 09.15. Booth's bound 08665 is still there, with no rush it seems, to get it to Rotherham.

For those interested, in order from the road bridge are:
Line 1 ( nearest mainline ) - 56093, 08665
Line 2 - 56099, 048, 134, 033, 079, 110, 068, 041, 053, 055, 072, 119, 056 & 116.

Open Day

Looking at TOPS the night before, we decided to do Midland Road, as we need a few F/Liner 66's from here. Didn't disappoint, as me and the old man, both copped a couple each.

With it being only £4 for the car park, we caught the bus from Leeds station to the open day. Standing room only by the time we found where we had to catch it from, and luckily for me, i got to stand behind a right smelly herbert. All 3 mile of it  Confused

Apart from 08908, i needed all of the pilots, so was pretty miffed when 08525 wasn't in view. Talking to a few of the drivers there, it was apparently stuck down by the main shed, so i had a walk down through the field, after coming out from the depot. No shunter, but plenty of wagons, dog poo and tat. The old man didn't fancy the walk, so i carried on by the footpath and allotments, to where i was greeted by 3 lads coming from the opposite market. Cheeky buggers only tried to pinch my binouclars, trying to attract my attention with one of them asking for the time. He could've least hidden his watch  Rolling Eyes

For those worried about my safety, cause i know you all care, he didn't get them. He did come away with a size 11 steel toe capped boot in his knackers though  Cool

Crossley's Scrapyard

Wanting to grab a piccy of 01507, Shipley was next. Only trouble with this place, especially if visting during the week, there is nowhere to park. The scrapyard is closed at the weekend though, so i chose to abandon the motor at the top of their driveway. God knows why, but they have 3 shunters here. The 01, plus 2 other industrial ones, which i couldn't id. Also, tucked away amongst the bushes, a green battered old thing, was rusting away at the top of the yard. Anyway, didn't stop for very long, so i grab a few piccies, and headed off for the K&WVR.

Keighley & Worth Valley Railway

Seemed to take an age to get here. Traffic was pretty bad, but them bloody hills on the approach to Haworth village. The poor old car, i didn't think we were going to make it. Must have been all the weight  Embarassed

Anyway, never been here before, so was pleasantly surprised to see 08266 standing outside the shed. And very nice it looked to. Not at all bovvered about the kettles, so grabbed a piccy of the 08, then asked where the class 20 was. Tucked away in the shed we were told, but was given a guided tour of the depot, so that was good.
http://i1008.photobucket.com/albu...210/concretebob/2009_09130079.jpg

Embsay & Bolton Abbey Steam Railway

Again, like the K&WVR, it took ages to get to Embsay. Fairly disappointed on arrival, as only D2203 was viewable. Picture came out blurred aswell  Sad

Asking about, we were told that some of the locos were at the back of the shed, so we happily latched on to some guys who were just about to get a tour of the depot. Not sure whether we should've been there, but no-one said nothing, so we just followed the party. Shunter wise, only the class 14 D9513 was visable. Apart from the two 31's, everything else was up at Bolton Abbey. Bored witless ( i've cleaned that up a little   Smile ), we all had a history lesson about some manky wooden coach that was failling to bits, before heading off to see the 2 08's up at Bolton Abbey.
http://i1008.photobucket.com/albu...210/concretebob/2009_09130087.jpg
http://i1008.photobucket.com/albu...210/concretebob/2009_09130093.jpg

By the time we got here, i'd managed to get me a banging headache. The 37 & 47 were in a photographable position, but 08054 & 08773 were parked away from the station, out of view for a decent photo. It does look like a footpath runs down by the side of the sidings, but as i was feeling sick, i couldn't be bothered trying to find it. To make matters worse, the cafe coffee was flamin' awful, plus it was 1940's day. The music they were playing, christ what a racket. Made my headache, all that much better...Not  Shocked

And that was it. Highlights for me, were loads of totty in Leeds, which is always good. Plenty of shunter cops and visited lines that we'd never been before. Only downside, was driving all that way to Bolton Abbey, and not managing to get a photo of the 2 08's. Oh, and not being able to see 08525.
