The Real FRED...

This picture brings back great memories of the Canton Depot shuntergang. 08951 was officially named FRED in a ceremony on the 21st July 2003 after former Canton Depot fitter Fred Billet who retired four years earlier after 50 years service. Four of the rogues including the roguess still look after Tidal's ailing fleet.

Canton Depot always turned their loco's out in immaculate condition off a D xam. Here is an article that I wrote about the Shunter Gang many years ago.

No Brian, that's Mal Smith who took charge of the shunter gang a couple of years ago after they all moved to Margam Depot. However, he volunteered earlier this year to work on the Bones at Eastleigh together with four other fitters from Margam Depot. John Sadler does feature in the following picture with Barry Evans, former Fleet Manager and David Mathews former Business Manager South before they both retired. Regretably those type of characters don't exist today.  Sad
